My Other Job is Being a Hamster

The winter offers us many things: the chance to enjoy a fire in the fireplace, getting some use out of your winter jackets, a few opportunities to drive in the snow with a bunch of yeahoos, and the time to get reacquainted with your indoor trainer. Yep, I'm talking about that sly minx that begs you to clamp your wheel in and bore yourself to tears in under 10 minutes flat.

I know roadies eschew trainers and swear by their rollers. I own a set of rollers and actually like to use them but the trainer offers you more stability and the chance to do some drills you would be hard pressed to do on your rollers. Well, technically, you could do them on rollers but some crash pads would be prudent if you decided to do so.

One of the drills I've being doing every once in a while is spin-ups. 10 seconds at high rpm, 10 seconds higher rpm, and 10 seconds max rpm. What does this do for me? I dunno(muscle recruitment?), I just do what my workout says. Tonight marked a new high for me in the rpm department.

With a number like 182 rpm I'm pretty sure that if I can't find a finance job I can fall back on my cadence. Moonlighting as a hamster in a wheel doesn't pay well but, damn, I think I'd be good at it!

Watts? It's all about cadence...and ball bearings.
